Continuity or integration?

We often treat data integration as a necessary evil—a technical challenge to be solved after the fact. But this framing misses a fundamental insight:
Data only needs to be integrated when it's fragmented in the first place.
Data integration is reactive. It’s the work we do to stitch together information that lives in different programs, formats, and silos. It may work, but it’s expensive and error-prone. Every time you move data between systems, data gets out of sync, context gets lost, and errors creep in. These "End-to-end" solutions are really pieces of data taped together.
Data continuity, by contrast, is proactive. It’s the principle of unifying data to keep it coherent as it flows through your organization—maintaining a single source of truth, establishing a clear lineage, and ensuring information moves seamlessly across functions.
The distinction matters because it shifts where you invest your effort. Integration work manages a symptom; continuity prevents the disease. If data continuity is built into your system architecture from the start, fragmentation never happens. There’s no scattered data to integrate later.
Of course, complete continuity is rarely achievable in complex organizations. Some integration will always be necessary. But if we don't accept it as inevitable, the mindset shifts from focusing on departmental efficiencies to creating a system with transformational outcomes.
The best data strategy doesn’t solve for integration. It prevents the need for it.
